Enmeshed

Enmeshed evokes the soul-charring premonitions that haunt dreams. Leslee Smucker‘s violin playing and voice are presented in their rawest forms and also layered and mangled via electronic manipulations. 

Enmeshed was premiered as part of multimedia performance Meshes (2019), an evening-length exploration of silent film Meshes of the Afternoon (1943) by Maya Deren. 

The text is from the Mathnavi, by Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī, a Persian mystic from the 13th century. Setting these particular texts was inspired by the composition Sound and Silence II (1971), by Tera de Marez Oyens, which includes the same texts as interludes between its graphically-notated movements.
